Al-Zarqawi Caught, Freed

Today brings news that Abu Mus’ab Al Zarqawi was apparently caught and mistakenly freed last year:

The question I have to ask is how influential is al-Zarqawi? Is he really leading the so-called "insurgents" in Iraq? Or is he more a figurehead, a sort of mythic idol for disparate groups to rally around? I am not personally sure, though I would tend to go with the latter. If the Americans caught him, I do not believe that the situation in Iraq qould change.
